Act of Bravery | unfinished story for kids | Elijah Wee | Singapore

I wrote the following unfinished piece of work "Act of bravery" in July 2013.

Beads of perspiration rolled down Davin’s cheeks incessantly like broken beads. Trudging back home from school, Davin felt as glum as an oyster. My school bag really weighed like a ton of bricks! However the very thought of his favourite dish that his mother had promised to cook for him, awaiting him at home, reenergized his flagging spirits. “The teacher really gives lots of homework. The load of homework is indeed superfluous!” Davin muttered to himself grumpily.

With the sun blazing down mercilessly from the azure blue sky and onto the fast wilting walking figure, Davin suddenly caught a strong whiff of smoke. What is this? At that juncture, a shrill cry for help sent Davin reeling from his thoughts and back into the reality of the present. To his utmost horror, Davin froze in his tracks, open-mouthed. A flat just a hundred metres ahead was on fire!

Unrelentingly, crimson-red flames licked the flat and threatened menacingly to burn down the entire building. People running out of the flat were screaming helplessly and in great despair, while burly firefighters on the scene were trying desperately to put out the blazing flames. Just then, what Davin saw out of the corner of his eye made him gasp. Several passers-by were trying to hold back an agitated mother from rushing back into the burning inferno – her daughter was apparently still trapped in her apartment! “Please save my daughter! Oh please, someone, please …, “ cries filled with abysmal despair rang out from the distraught mother’s lips, her eyes darting imploring glances to those around her. Without the slightest hesitation, Davin knew instinctively what he had to do.

As brave as a lion, without heeding any care over his personal safety, Davin dashed into the burning flat and up the stairs like a bullet from a revolver. Reaching the apartment of the little girl, he found the entire place engulfed in flames and thick smoke. No matter how fearsome the fire was, Davin remained as cool as a cucumber, determined to save the little girl. Taking a few seconds more to accustom himself to the harsh choking smoke, he then started calling out, “Little girl, where are you?”

“I’m here!” the shrill voice of a child filled with renewed hope called out from within the smoky apartment.

“Where?” Davin asked loudly as he felt his way forward with his outstretched arms.

         “Over here!”

Davin rushed to open all the doors of the bedrooms. Finally on opening the last door, he saw the little girl ...

Nerve-biting episode above - perhaps I will be using this or completing this in another story some time later.

Till the next time,

Stuck in the lift | Short essay, story for kids | Elijah Wee | Singapore

"Stuck in the lift" - an experience I am sure a number of you may be able to relate to ... but in this particular case though, it was a little worse than the usual one ...              Brave.             I had always thought I was brave. As brave as a lion. Not fearful of anything.             Until the lift had broken down.             I was waiting patiently for the lift doors to open. A mother and her daughter waited patiently. The mother, clad in a light blue dress made of best quality material, clutched her daughter’s hand. Her lustrous blond hair cascaded down her well-toned shoulders. My innermost thoughts were soon jolted by the familiar mechanical sound of the lift’s doors opening. If only I had reconsidered taking the stairs … ...

Fishing Trip (Primary 2 Essay for 8 year olds by Elijah Wee, Singapore)

Another one from the old collection of my Primary Two (8 years old) essays. I did this one at home. Fishing Trip It was a hot and blistering day .   Tom and his father decided to go to the river to fish.   It was Tom’s first fishing trip and he didn’t want to miss it. When they reached there, Tom and his father sat at the river and Tom’s father took out bait and fishing rods to fish with.   Tom’s father gave Tom one to fish. After half an hour, Tom felt a strong tug from his fishing line.   Tom quickly pulled out his fishing rod out.   The fish that he caught was struggling to get out.   Tom also struggled to pull the fish out of the water.   When he finally managed to pull it out, he took a look at it and found out it was an enormous fish.   Tom felt excited about this first catch. After that, they started a fire. They cooked the fish over the fire. The fish was very delicious. Tom looked forwa...

Marooned on an island | Essay for 10 year olds | Elijah Wee | Singapore

Hey there. Here's an adventure story " Marooned on an island" from me - a departure from my usual essay topics. Hope you enjoy this!             “No. This cannot be happening,” I muttered to myself as I stared at what was right before my bespectacled eyes. I had been marooned on a deserted island. The ship I was in had run aground.             The sun shone brilliantly and the high clouds drifted across the clear blue sky. My hands felt clammy. I tried looking for any signs of human activity but there was nobody in sight. The thought of being all alone sent shivers down my spine.             Being positive, I decided to go in search of food for myself. Arriving at the entrance of the jungle twenty minutes later, I was trembling like a leaf and my heart pounded wildly as I staggered uninhabited jungle on the i...
