What happens when you turn a deaf ear to your elders? | Essay for 10 year olds | Elijah Wee | Singapore
The title of my next essay is "What happens when you turn a deaf ear to your elders?". Have a read to see what happens ...
Blurry-eyed, Jane woke up
and thought aloud. What is the time now? Seeing the time on her alarm clock,
she gasped in horror. With a whoosh, Jane rushed towards the bathroom like a
speeding bullet from a revolver. It was already seven in the morning!
Jane finished her bath and
dressed into her school uniform all within the time frame of seven minutes. Mrs
Tay shook her head when Jane came out. “You should really have a sense of
urgency,” Mrs Tay told her, her voice indicative she was angry. Her blue eyes
stared at Jane as Jane wolfed down her breakfast of ham sandwiches. Mrs Tay
also reminded Jane to take an umbrella along. The sky looked dark grey, which
could mean that there was an impending storm. Unfortunately, Jane simply turned
a deaf ear on her mother’s advice and replied defiantly in a huff, “You don’t
think I’m that stupid, don’t you?”
Slamming the door behind
her, Jane walked, occasionally stealing glances at the sky. The sun glared down
at her from the sky as though reprimanding her for her disobedience. Again,
Jane took no notice as she walked on, her footsteps breaking the pregnant
silence. The clear blue sky was unexpectedly overwhelmed by menacing dark
clouds. Out of the blue, streaks of lightning provided brief lights in the sea
of darkness. The thunder then grumbled like an old man, providing an ominous
warning.
A host of golden daffodils,
beside a lake, were fluttering and dancing wildly in the strong winds, which
were screaming like a banshee. “Can you do anything right?” Jane thought
bitterly. She began to take to her heels. At that juncture, rain began to pour
down in torrents, forming ripples across lakes and puddles. Running frantically
to the nearest shelter, she fell down like an old tree giving way in a storm.
Tears of excruciating pain
streamed down Jane’s face as her mind went in a rollercoaster of emotions. Her
face was washed with buckets of tears and mixed with the unfeeling drops of
rain. Fortunately, a kind passer-by saw her lying on the pavement, helped her
to her feet and kindly sent her back home.
“Now, have you learnt your
lesson yet?” Mrs Tay reprimanded her. “Yes, mummy, I will never turn a deaf ear
to your advice again,” Jane said. Grateful that Jane was unscathed except for a
few cuts and bruises, Mrs Tay smiled and went to get the first aid box to apply
some ointment onto her cuts and bruises. Jane had certainly learnt a lesson
that day and that her elders had meant well whenever they advised her.
Have you ever disregarded what your parents or elders advised you and gone on to learn things the hard way? Care to share? ;-)
