"Committing theft at the
shopping centre" was put together as one of my practice essays when I was nine years old.
The shopping centre was packed like a can of sardines
with shoppers swarming around for good buys. As the cold, freezing air wafted
through the shopping centre, families and young teenagers were seen leisurely
window-shopping. A primary six student named Sue was in her school uniform and
was browsing through some jewellery at the department store. School had ended
for the day and Sue had called her mother, Mrs Lim to seek permission for her
to go to the shopping centre. Mrs Lim agreed to let Sue do so.
As she entered the department store, Sue saw a
middle-aged lady holding a necklace and walking out from the department store.
Sue stared longingly at a necklace similar to what the middle-aged lady had
purchased and thought, “How I wished I could purchase a necklace for myself.
However, I do not have sufficient money to do so.” Almost instantly, an idea of
stealing it struck her. Without any second thought, she decided to steal it.
Just as Sue was about to place the necklace into her bag,
a booming voice was heard, startling Sue out of her wits. “Hold it right
there!” It turned out that it was the security guard who had caught Sue
red-handed. Burning with embarrassment, Sue stood rooted to the ground. The
security guard held Sue very tightly and whisked her to the department store
manager’s office.
When Sue and the security guard reached the department
store manager’s office, the necklace was confiscated by the security guard. The
manager was angry with Sue and decided to call the police. Tears rolling down
her cheeks, Sue tried to persuade the department store manager not to do so but
to no avail.
When the police arrived, they were surprised at first to
see a primary six girl commit a crime. But after the department store manager
explained what had happened and some thinking, the police decided to leave Sue
with a stern warning.
When Sue came back from the shopping centre, she saw that
Mrs Lim’s eyebrows were furrowed in anger. Mrs Lim was actually being called by
the department store manager about Sue shoplifting. Mrs Lim’s face was also a
red mask of fury and her blood boiled. Mrs Lim began reprimanding Sue
furiously. As Sue was being scolded by Mrs Lim, she felt remorseful and
regretted her actions earlier on. After Mrs Lim scolded Sue, she apologized
incessantly to Mrs Lim. Hearing her apology, Mrs Lim decided to forgive her.
Since that incident, Sue dared not try to shoplift again.
As the saying goes, ‘once bitten, twice shy’.
