Gaming at home | Essay for kids | Elijah Wee | Singapore

Children these days have more easily within reach - computers, laptops, tablets like iPads and smartphones. And what do we use these gadgets for ... well you and I both know - is to play games. Some children spend too much of their time playing games; this will not benefit their future in life. Let's have a look at this topic about "gaming at home".

Gaming at home is what you will find many children doing during their free time. Hardly will you find children engrossed in reading a book. Most parents like mine advocate limits to how much time we can have in playing games on the Internet or downloaded from the Internet onto our technological gadgets like iPads, laptops or smartphones. Some parents agree that video games are harmful and can have devastating effects on their children’s wellbeing and future. But is it really true all the time?

Firstly, an advantage could be derived from educational games, which can help play a role in educating children by reinforcing the topics taught by teachers or parents to them in a fun way. Children who are bored during class and unable to understand certain topics could benefit from educational games. In addition, educational games can also teach children new and complex topics by breaking down the topics into simpler and bite-size sections.

On the contrary, some video games can have sinister and insidious effects in children. The wide myriad of engaging video games may cause children to become extremely addicted to them. These games could distract children from their studies and succumb to the lure of playing video games. Furthermore, when very young children become very savvy in online gaming, many undesirable and restricted websites can end up being at their disposal, literally just a click away.

The Internet is but a mere tool in our hands. We must use it wisely and bear in mind the advantages and disadvantages of it. While useful in many ways like information research, watching educational videos or buying books not found in bookshops here, the Internet could unleash a great amount of harmful effects on children when they use it primarily for online gaming or downloading games. Once addicted, children may not be able to balance their time effectively between studies and play.

In conclusion, we need the wisdom of our parents to use the time spent on the Internet and playing games carefully, for much of which the tide turns depends largely on users and their intended actions.

What are your thoughts about "gaming at home"? What do your parents say about this topic? Do your parents put limits to your time in playing games?

Stuck in the lift | Short essay, story for kids | Elijah Wee | Singapore

"Stuck in the lift" - an experience I am sure a number of you may be able to relate to ... but in this particular case though, it was a little worse than the usual one ...              Brave.             I had always thought I was brave. As brave as a lion. Not fearful of anything.             Until the lift had broken down.             I was waiting patiently for the lift doors to open. A mother and her daughter waited patiently. The mother, clad in a light blue dress made of best quality material, clutched her daughter’s hand. Her lustrous blond hair cascaded down her well-toned shoulders. My innermost thoughts were soon jolted by the familiar mechanical sound of the lift’s doors opening. If only I had reconsidered taking the stairs … ...

Marooned on an island | Essay for 10 year olds | Elijah Wee | Singapore

Hey there. Here's an adventure story " Marooned on an island" from me - a departure from my usual essay topics. Hope you enjoy this!             “No. This cannot be happening,” I muttered to myself as I stared at what was right before my bespectacled eyes. I had been marooned on a deserted island. The ship I was in had run aground.             The sun shone brilliantly and the high clouds drifted across the clear blue sky. My hands felt clammy. I tried looking for any signs of human activity but there was nobody in sight. The thought of being all alone sent shivers down my spine.             Being positive, I decided to go in search of food for myself. Arriving at the entrance of the jungle twenty minutes later, I was trembling like a leaf and my heart pounded wildly as I staggered uninhabited jungle on the i...

Incident of cheating at the exams (Primary 4 essay for 10 year olds by Elijah Wee, Singapore)

I am particularly proud of this essay I wrote when I was in Primary 4  (10 years old) at Ngee Ann Primary School - received my personal best score for this one, entitled "Incident of cheating at the exams" .     John was a lazy boy. He would always play computer games and watch television. One day, before his English examination, he began to panic as he had not revised for it. John took out his textbook and copied some notes down on the palm of his hand.     The next day, when the English examination had started, their form teacher, Mrs Ong, left the examination hall and the stern-looking Mrs Lim entered. As John was writing on his paper, he encountered a difficult question. No matter how hard he tried to think of the answer, his mind remained a blank state . Just then, an idea brewed in his mind, "Why not copy the answers from the palm of my hand?"     Before copying, John scanned the whole place like a robber on the lookout for men in b...
