Here is another essay on a birthday ... though with a twist ...
The birthday was unforgettable.
The birthday was unforgettable.
Matthew would remember it
for many years to come. Recalling it sent remorseful tears down his cheeks.
It was a tranquil Saturday
afternoon. Matthew was at home engrossly glued to the TV with an episode of
“Glee”. His mother, Mrs Gan was out from buying a gift for Matthew. Unable to
bear her son’s incessant demands for a gift for him, Mrs Gan relented and went
to Toys R Us to purchase a toy for him. As her husband had passed away a few
years ago, Mrs Gan had to work extremely hard simply to make ends meet for the
family. Sporting bone white hair and heavy eye bags, Matthew’s mother looked as
old as the hills. The number of wrinkles on Mrs Gan’s face was most telling of
the number of years she had slogged.
Just then, a call came
through.
The phone in the living room
awakened with the shrill ringing startling Matthew out of his favourite
programme. Matthew’s world of happiness shattered into a million pieces when he
heard the news. Apparently, it was a police officer on the line. The police
officer informed him that his mother had been involved in an accident. The
policeman described the accident as most unfortunate. Hearing this, Matthew
stood rooted to the ground and was dumbfounded. May be the police had dialed
the wrong number? He refused to believe it. Even if Ma had really met with an
accident, it would be nothing more than fractured bones? Thoughts raced through
Matthew’s mind as he put down the receiver. Next, he fumbled with the remote
control to change the channel.
Changing to the news
channel, Matthew could not believe his eyes. To his upmost horror, everything
that the policeman had narrated to him was true! “No! It can’t be! It can ever
be!” Matthew’s voce reverberated around his four room flat. The news channel
was actually broadcasting the accident.
From a boy who had
everything, Matthew was now declared as an orphan. He could not believe his
eyes. He simply stared at the TV set in sheer astonishment.
To this day, Matthew has not
been able to get over the demise of his mother. Once in a while, he would catch
himself asking aloud, “Ma what’s for dinner?” And each time, his hapless
question would hang in mid-air before plunging into the depths of desolated
silence. He had been orphaned at such a young age but he was determined to
succeed for he knew that his mother was looking down on him.
